Snowballs for Sale - Calgary, Canada
Inspired by a recently viewed documentary on the bottled water industry, I set out to protest against consumerism (and maybe make a few bucks in the process...) All that was needed was a well executed cardboard sign (I had studied many on my travels across the states), a box for transporting the goods, and the snowballs themselves - so all in all, a pretty simple business start up.
I set myself up on 10th Street NW, in the popular suburb of Kensington in Calgary, Canada. It was a pleasant 3 degrees celsius; perfect snowballing weather. Traffic was a bit slow, but I managed a donation of $2, from a kind man. This man then went on to become my first unpaid employee. We had a business meeting in a back alley and discussed expanding into coloured and flavoured snowballs, online sales and international opportunities.
Business then picked up when my new employee worked his way up to salesperson - doing an amazing job of talking up my great product and all its benefits. We raised another 91 cents, which gave the business a total profit of $2.91.
The business had been well received - turns out you really can sell just about anything so long as you market it correctly. It all comes down to a good business plan. At the end of the day, I closed up shop and donated the snowballs to a charity, called the city of Calgary - enabling me to write them off as a tax deduction.
